As for your question, the majority of your journey is heading in the same direction from your starting point.

Out of interest, you refer to them as Office 1 and Office 2 - are they the same company? If they are the same company, which office will you actually be working at?
Not the same company. There is a possibility that I might take another route for the new office which might be longer but goes around the M5, making the journey totally different... but this would probably be bending the rules...

It's all hypothetical at the moment, but I am trying to work out my costs before i commit to anything.

      24 month rule

"A tricky one as the journey cost has not changed significantly but I would say that 14 miles apart is not the same workplace so I would claim"

My two penneth worth, I have a letter from HMRC indicating that they would allow resetting of the clock if the place of work moves over 10 miles, and there is no reference to the journey direction.

Remember the "man building a bridge over the river" scenario? Depending which end he was building the journey was different even though the destination was pretty much identical.

The rule of thumb is best explained by looking at which main line railway station you would be using (ignoring the fact that you're driving, that you use the tube and/or buses or walk to work or whatever). If it's the same one, then the journey is substantially the same.

Sadly there is no hard and fast rule, just like most HMRC-related things. You have to make a judgement and be happy to defend it if challenged.

No. You make an objective decision based on your proper understanding of the rules. The rules aren't written to be definitive since you would then have to cover any and all scenarios, and there are hundreds of variations, as we have seen in our own little thread.

But you have enough information now to make that decision.

That would seem to be a good yardstick and I guess would stand up in any discussions. On that basis all 5 of my moves within the Midlands would have qualified to reset the clock. The first move did actually satisfy HMRC.

Question to the audience. Is asking HMRC a good or bad idea?

                  I do indeed.

The problem is they will give an answer the OP doesn't want.... a bit like on here.

If the method and cost stayed the same (i.e. you were driving there and using the same amount more or less of petrol) I'd say that's the same location.

If you drove to one and got the train to another or something you could perhaps argue it.
