Abbey Tax and VAT inspection - Cracking service

Got kindly offered a VAT inspection by HMRC a few weeks ago. Spoke to them and tried to talk them out of it - nope you have to be there for us to visit you at home. Despite my protests that this was a waste of time and would cost me money.

Anyway, contacted Abbey Tax via IPSE membership. Can't praise them highly enough. They contacted HMRC on my behalf and pretty much handled everything.

Ended up with HMRC agreeing to forgo the visit and just speak to me on the phone for 5 minutes....

Superb service I must say. Worth the IPSE membership for all the hassle they saved me.

(Also, if HMRC had still insisted on a visit I would have been able to claim for loss of income via IPSE anyway).

So next time I tell you to use your IPSE membership benefits and services, you might listen?

Hey Mal. Always said IPSE membership is a no brainer if just for the IR35 coverage. Couple of extra nice benefits like jury cover etc as well.

But thats pretty much all I pay it for Im afraid.

You and most of the membership, so no problem there. But people don't always realise just how much benefit that membership offers in the real world; your example is a good one, and given it saved you a day's lost billing you've now covered the cost of membership for the year...

I don't know how VAT inspections work but wouldn't your accountant be able to deal with this in most cases or is it a different level?

Your accountant could probably deal with it but most would charge you for it as it's outside the normal run of the mill services.

Lets hope it isn't the start of anything else coming.
Sometimes IR35 investigations can start off the back of a VAT investigation, luckily at least he has insurance in place to negate this.
