I too have the same questions as I am looking to start out in the world of the contractor; to take some control back of my life!
I have been looking at this and the PCG website too. There are some invaluable resources on both. I have also been speaking with contractors where I work too. They are usually very happy to give advise.
My research continues with accountant and tax consultant too as I try to understand the tax liabilities and salary models a contractor can adopt.
I must say it is rather enjoying and exciting!
Cheers guys and hopefully speak soon!

Well bugger me! After three years of giving the same advice, someone has taken it on board. Well done, mate!
Thanks for the invite..I'll hold myself back in the first instance .
I guess the questions that evry newbie has are pretty much the same and you can see 'em striped through this, and other forums. Forums are always a good starting place but if you don't go and *ask* the people who know, the professionals then it's just an opinion.
I'm sorry, you appear to be far too polite and sensible for this forum. You need to do at least one, preferably several, of the following in order to fit in here.
1) Be able to swap playground insults and engage in "You're stupid","No you're stupid","No YOU'RE stupid"..... style exchanges without any hint of humour or maturity.
2) Pick a religion and aggressively espsouse its virtues to all and sundry, whether they want to hear about it or not. I belive Bhuddism is currently available.
3) Invent a wildly successfull Plan B and boast incessantly about it without ever actually telling anyone what it is.
4) Reveal yourself to be either a dodgy Doctor Who monster or else some other form of alien life.
5) Develop an irrational obsession with anal fisting.
I'm sure others can come up with some equally helpfull suggestions.
