SQL BI Market in North West of UK

    Chaps,

I am thinking very seriously of moving on from my role and going down the contract route. I have been researching the market over the past month or so and I see 2-3 roles per day within my commute and within my skillset.

Pushing my commute out a bit and blagging some of my lesser skills we are talking a few more. I am a SQL Dev (DW and front end with a sprinkling of DBA)

I understand that's quite specific, however I was wondering if that kind of rate of vacancies is good/bad?

Obviously I have a 3 month notice to run down but my plan is to start applying proper when I am 4 weeks out.

From my quick browsing of this board it seems that newbs get a bit of a tough time so prepared for that.

    Any advice appreciated.

SQL Market in general has been up and down, but as a few have said on here many times, it can be all about timing.

Start applying now, some pimps might not like the 3 month notice period in fact I'd try and get this shortened as you may see a great gig but the pimp/client won't wait.

      Good Luck

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.

Most of the contracts I see are 3 months, they won't wait for 3 months notice. In fact, most pimps who cold call me lose interest as soon as I say 4 weeks notice, they immediately drift in to the 'call you nearer the date' mode.

I don't know how you have researched the market, but you will find several jobs advertised don't exist, they are just trawls for CVs, the jobs that do exist get advertised by several agencies and you have to guess which one has the inside track to the customer and which are chancers submitting CVs on spec.

If you really want to see what the market is like, submit a CV, say you are available immediately, see how many interviews you get offered then make your excuses and drop out.

Pimps = Agents. Got that. Still trying to figure out tulip

I can't believe some 'pimps' will put up a role just to trawl for CV's. Why on earth would they do that? To get a selection for their next 'legit' role?

Thanks for the good wishes will keep you updated on progress

Couple of strong leads hopefully progressing nicley.

I think I am getting better at sniffing out time wasters. Once they ask who my manager is, it start to ring alarm bells.

I get at least 3 calls a day from London numbers from "Agents" speaking broken English offering me jobs in London or abroad (then asking would I relocate!) is that normal?

Yes, as they smell fresh meat.
