They'll play in iTunes under Windows. There's a limit of 5 devices you can authorise at once with Apple. -
I can copy any itunes video files over to my Android phone and they work ok.Originally posted by d000hg View PostFrom a little Googling it seems the answer to my initial question is that iTunes is, barring a few indies who sell DRM-free, the only way to buy TV content for an iOS device. You can obviously rip content from any source - regardless if you own it - to a DRM-free format iTunes/iOS will work with, but that's a separate discussion.
Personally speaking this means I either buy on iTunes, or buy a DVD and muck about with HandBrake and MakeMKV. Which is a bit of a PITA and to save a few quid perhaps not worth it, for something I just want to watch once. For something I want to rewatch it's a harder choice, because I assume iTunes video files won't play on non-Apple devices.
I use handbrake to copy dvds I've bought and want to watch on mobile devices. It doesn't take much mucking about if you select the format you want from the menu on the right hand side.Comment

iTunes purchases? When I try to play them in VLC on the iMac they won't play, I presume because they are DRM protected. The ones I've converted into iTunes myself I can, i.e. the other 99%.....Originally posted by Batcher View PostI can copy any itunes video files over to my Android phone and they work ok.

Yeah the issue is TV. I don't like getting tied into any ecosystem so don't want an AppleTV, and cannot be arsed setting up a media serverOriginally posted by stek View PostThey'll play in iTunes under Windows. There's a limit of 5 devices you can authorise at once with Apple.
Plugging the iPad into the TV with HDMI-out seems a little crappy...Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

I've tried them all, Plex, XBMC, Twontky-whatsit, AppleTV just works, ok you are locked in to a certain extent but you can either either hack the ATV (tried that, didn't like it, too much to mess with) or use the rip torrents or legal files into iTunes and it just works way.....Originally posted by d000hg View PostYeah the issue is TV. I haven't bought any programmes from itunes so that's probably why the ones I have transferred work. I only have music videos that came with cds and other freebies from itunes.Originally posted by stek View PostiTunes purchases? Ye but it's effort getting up and looking for the box. Then you have to physically open it and get this huge disk out and you even have to bend down and put it in.Originally posted by d000hg View PostMy DVDs play on every computer and device... except those without a hole to stick them in
I've downloaded a DVD rather than spend time looking for it on the shelf, and its quicker too!Comment

AFAIK if you have amazon prime you can download any content bought from Amazon Instant video to an Apple device.Comment

I was under the impression their service is streaming only - even the stuff you buy - but since I am a Prime member I will check and hope to be proved wrong.Originally posted by oracleslave View PostAFAIK if you have amazon prime you can download any content bought from Amazon Instant video to an Apple device.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment
