I understand that you would like to know if you can download content on your iPad to a watch it offline

I can confirm that you can watch downloaded titles on your iPad even if you don't have an Internet connection, to watch offline you can return to Your Video Library to view the downloaded content.

To download videos that you've rented or purchased to your iOS device:

1. Open Your Video Library from the Amazon Instant Video app home screen, or go to the following link in your Safari web browser:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/library
2. Tap the movie title you want to download.
3. Click "Download" next to the item you want to download. For TV episodes, click the down arrow to the left of the play button to begin downloading.

You can continue to use the Amazon Instant Video app while downloads are in progress, and can also select other videos to queue for download. If you need to leave the Amazon Instant Video app, downloads resume when you re-open the application.

To delete videos, go back to Your Video Library and click "Delete Download" for movies or the check mark icon for TV episodes you want to delete.

Ultimately, i'm thinking about buying all TV content incl movies from Apple rather than continue to fill the house with DVDs. Will Apple and iTunes go away (like vinyl or cassette tape)? So long as it's not in my lifetime I don't suppose it matters.

I just rented the movie Rush and dowloaded it to my iphone.

I don't share any fear that Apple might go under like some alarmists, I just don't want to be tied into their products. APPL is unlikely to disappear but their products might become crap if they take a wrong turn. Conceivably they might decide to get out of the TV business if they had a shake-up since it's not their main income stream, and investing in Apple for the "it just works" factor only to find you have to hack about to watch your content on your primary watching device (your TV) would be rather galling!

AFAIK if you have amazon prime you can download any content bought from Amazon Instant video to an Apple device.

I was under the impression their service is streaming only - even the stuff you buy - but since I am a Prime member I will check and hope to be proved wrong.

Ye but it's effort getting up and looking for the box. Then you have to physically open it and get this huge disk out and you even have to bend down and put it in.

I've downloaded a DVD rather than spend time looking for it on the shelf, and its quicker too!

I've tried them all, Plex, XBMC, Twontky-whatsit, AppleTV just works, ok you are locked in to a certain extent but you can either either hack the ATV (tried that, didn't like it, too much to mess with) or use the rip torrents or legal files into iTunes and it just works way.....

Balance being-locked-in-a-bit against endless-dicking-about-keeping-it-working!

iTunes purchases? When I try to play them in VLC on the iMac they won't play, I presume because they are DRM protected. The ones I've converted into iTunes myself I can, i.e. the other 99%.....

I haven't bought any programmes from itunes so that's probably why the ones I have transferred work. I only have music videos that came with cds and other freebies from itunes.

They'll play in iTunes under Windows. There's a limit of 5 devices you can authorise at once with Apple.

I use handbrake to copy dvds I've bought and want to watch on mobile devices. It doesn't take much mucking about if you select the format you want from the menu on the right hand side.

From a little Googling it seems the answer to my initial question is that iTunes is, barring a few indies who sell DRM-free, the only way to buy TV content for an iOS device. You can obviously rip content from any source - regardless if you own it - to a DRM-free format iTunes/iOS will work with, but that's a separate discussion.

Personally speaking this means I either buy on iTunes, or buy a DVD and muck about with HandBrake and MakeMKV. Which is a bit of a PITA and to save a few quid perhaps not worth it, for something I just want to watch once. For something I want to rewatch it's a harder choice, because I assume iTunes video files won't play on non-Apple devices.
