    What web site software?

Probably been discussed elsewhere, but don’t have the patience to search for it.

What software products/components do I need to be able to create a simple web site with some commercial functionality?

Many years ago I was a bit of a techie, but have lost touch a bit and would like to be able to create proof-of-concept web sites for various new business ideas without the need to a) revel the idea to others and b) incur costs paying someone to do it.

    Thanks in advance.

          If you're Windows inclined:-

          Windows Server 2003
          IIS
          SQL Server
          Visual Studio .NET

          If you're *nix inclined:-

          Linux/BSD
          Apache
PostgreSQL (using MySQL may cause headaches if you want to migrate to a more professional DB later on)
          PHP/Java/Ruby On Rails

Kidding? I have found hand coding in notepad a darn sight quicker in the end than any web authoring sofware I have used, they all seem to produce overbloated stuff with loads of totally redundant tags and properties.

              Agree with you there.

Until you are proficient in (X)HTML/CSS in notepad, you should not be let anywhere near the likes of VS.NET for Internet web design.

So much crap is spewed by these drag n drop editors.

Hell yeah. I just "optimized" a site for someone that was spewing 400k of viewstate into a page along with table based layout from visual studio. After hacking it around a bit, we're down to 15k pages!

                    Honestly - it doesnt matter

                    Hi

I am a Web Producer and run a web production company. Its not about the software as they all give you the same results and some argue that notepad is the best...

Get the design and copywriting finished first and storyboard the entire website. Then find a good developer to code it for you.

For a novice or rusty developer it will take days to acheive what a proficient web developer can do in 3 hours. So if you dont have a lot of time on your hand, get a professional design and a developer to help out.

You dont have to go down this route, but I would recommend it if you are not an industry 'geek'...

                    Take care
                    Danny
                    Many thanks
