Playing video from a tablet on a TV

Going on holiday and we know the place has a TV with HDMI, but no DVD player and the channels are rubbish. We can't rely on the TV having a USB socket that will play any format we might use, and we don't want to lug a laptop with us just for watching the odd show. But we do have both an iPad and a Nook so I wondered if it's easy to buy a cable which will "just work" and transfer sound and video to the TV? Or if you have to comb the web for the right type of cable, etc, etc.
The Nook has the advantage that it has microSD for storing stuff on, but it uses a proprietary cable (I thought only Apple did that these days!)

Sounds good, hadn't realised you could get them so cheap.

If you look at the Apple one, (a) it's very expensive (£40?) and (b) lots of reviewers on the Apple store say it doesn't work, although as many say that it does this has put me off getting one.

I think I'll invest in one of those £5 jobs and try it.

If you already have an Apple TV you could Airplay your movies to the telly.

          WARNING!!

Bought one. Didn't work on my iPad 2, the video has a strong pink hue making it unwatchable

            Works a treat.

Good for you. But perhaps impractical for the OP to lug all this on holiday.

Got a £5 one, early tests are looking good.

No idea how this affects battery life though.
