      Mint
WHS. Mint really does work out of the box and you can start listening to music and watching videos right away. I was iffy about it due to lack of support for previous versions, but the latest version Mint 13 has Long Term Support (LTS).

I won't go back to Ubuntu because they seem to have lost the plot.

For a server I am using Scientific Linux 6.2.

Other things in the mix are an openSUSE desktop (it's got good German support because of its origins) and FreeBSD (my hosting provider uses that so it makes sense to have a local copy for development and testing).

You can install the new MATE Desktop for the new Ubuntu v12.10 which is a fork of Gnome 2.x.

TBH i don't use Linux much as a desktop these days. It's a good server O/S but i can't be arsed with all of the fannying around trying to get things to work.

The release date kept being put back and when it did come out, there were lots of missing dependencies on the repos etc. The network interface stuff kept dropping out and wouldn't start properly. It was a chuffing nightmare to configure as server to be honest.

That's when I decided to move to Scientific and I am well happy with that.

CentOS6.2 is fine now, I must stress.

That was all for server stuff, if I were looking for a new Linux distro to use as a desktop then I'd go for mint.

Generally run whatever the Ubuntu LTS is at (12.04.1 IIRC) but I run them as VMs. No Dev work, just website stuff, tinternet and as sFTP/SSH access to NAS when away from home.

            Works fine for me.

But Suse and RHEL are available for Power, for the "it must be Linux" set

Currently using both Ubuntu 12.04 and Suse enterprise 11 sp2

The latter is more to provide additional backup options in the AWS spot market.

I've been using Ubuntu for a few years now. It works and the large user community is good but I think it has gone downhill recently. It used to just work but each time I have upgraded recently, things have broken and it takes a bit of tinkering to fix it (although to be fair, I have quite a complicated setup with DNS server, media streamers, CCTV and more) I still haven't been able to get it to automatically scale to the right resolution when the monitor is switched on.
The unity desktop is just awful but thankfully easy to switch to classic.

I have also heard good things about mint and was considering it next time I do a rebuild rather than an upgrade. I have used SUSE but really didn't like it - it seemed clumsy and unintuitive.

Been using CentOS as my preferred server distro but gonna give Scientific Linux a whirl, I see it's basically RHEL.

                      Gotta just love vm's
