Had enough of Virgin Media - anyone got any recommendations for good ISPs?
So I've learned a big lesson: cable is not necessarily quicker than ADSL , after all with the latter you're getting (sort of) your own dedicated line.
So its Sky for me - dumping Virgin at end of contract in December. Luckily it was a 6 month contract which they begged us to take when we threatened to leave last time they were crap.
How is Sky going to solve this ?
Fibre is and will be faster than ADSL, and you don't sort of get your own dedicated line as it all gets aggregated at the network so speeds can vary.

Incorrect. I'm running Virgin and Sky in parallel, Sky (ADSL) is usable at peak times, Virgin (cable) is not.
Your latter point is probably true, but the excuse Virgin has made is that there is "over-utilisation", so obviously something similar happens with fibre (not knowing any technical details).
Been with Sky for last 3 years, and surprisingly no issues at any point during that time, not even an outage (or at least not any that I've noticed, and we're fairly heavy usage household). Currently thinking of upgrading to their fibre package which I don't need, but it's a new toy, innit?!
fwiw, 12Mbps down/1mbps up and exchange is about 0.8 miles away, and this has always been pretty consistent.

Had SKY for 3 days now and noticing the consistency over Virgin.
Shame to go backwards but I guess when my SKY contract is over I could look at going back to Virgin if they've sorted their issues out.
Or maybe there'll be an alternate fibre provider by then
Got SKY ADSL and it's tulip - 6 mbits when exchange is on the same street and I was getting 16 Mbits on BeThere whilst being 500 meters further away: it's certainly throttled, recently started getting regular disconnections around midnight.
Used Telewest previously but new build rented house is the only one on street not connected to them, which of course does not stop them from dropping enticing offers in mailbox

6 Mbits is low but not as low as the 1-3 I regularly get with Virgin's fibre optic
When will these telecoms companies sort themselves out? TBH you get ripped off by all of them ...
