    Acer Laptop

I have been looking at buying one of the following laptops to replace my existing desktop and laptop, and wonder if any of you tecchie experts can confirm if any good. This is for home use, surfing and MS word/excel use etc and not really for gaming.

ACER Aspire 5733 15.6" Laptop at cheap prices | PC World

    Acer Aspire 5733 / Core i3-370M / 6GB / 320GB / 15.6 inch / Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit / Laptop / Notebook / Black - Laptops Computing at Play.com (UK)

Is the one on Play simply a good offer in comparison ?

    TIA.

Why isn't the word Acer banned on this board? tulip!

I used an Acer Windows XP laptop for about three years and it was just fine. In the end, the left mouse button on the track-pad collapsed and it wasn't worth fixing. The laptop still worked fine with an external mouse though.

I've had a number of Acer machines, as have my family. No problems really - when they get too old, they fail, as with most computers.

Personally, I'd spend a bit more and get an i5, though.

The problem is that "too old" is brand related. Too old for an Acer = 3 years. Too old for other brands is far older; I have an 8 year old Compaq laptop still churning away on a daily basis (I use it as a server with built-in UPS!).

The specs look great for the price. This is a bit more but as a desktop replacement, looks quite nice:
              Samsung RV720 17in Core i3 notebook ? reghardware

Thanks did have a look at Samsungs, although a couple of stores have said they come with loads of pre-installed software which I probably won't need to use and is a pain to remove. So I have bought one of the Acer models in my original post.

I am currently using an Acer Travelmate for business on a daily basis - no problems.

My last business desktop was also an Acer, but motherboard went within 2 years and had to be replaced - since replaced by a custom build.

No sure about the Inspire range, but the Travelmate series seem better quality / built ... time will tell
