Anything better than Lenovo for portable laptop?

I am going to need a new laptop that comes with me on vacations and on business trips etc. So it has to be a bit tough/rugged and not weigh a ton.
I currently have a Lenovo X61(t) and was planning on just getting a new Lenovo as this one has served me for almost 4 years and that seems a decent lifespan to me.
I am retiring the old one due to the tablet hinge becoming lose (I will not get a tablet/convertible stlyle again as I have not used that feature at all) and now the fan is starting to make a lot of noise and generally showing signs of old age.

So - is Lenovo still the best?

I Think consensus is that bar macs the expensive Lenovo models are the only heavy duty laptops left.

I personally have (and hate) one of the more recent Latitudes. the build quality is OK but why they insisted on adding a number pad to the keyboard I don't know.

I'm pretty sure dell add a number pad only on the 17" laptops ans surely you must have noticed that before you bought it!

I 've had a dell precision(15") for over 4 years now. Only going to be upgrading it as I need better VM capacity and a quad core processor

Its clientco's machine and its on a 15" model.

Personally I run a Z type Vaio as I prefer lightweight machines and endeavour to be careful.

I've cause I've just jinxed everything and will drop my briefcase from a height some time over the next week.

LOL, you have my type of luck I see.

The last 3 clients provided Lenovo's and they certainly do what they are supposed to. In fact I can't remember the last time I didn't have a Thinkpad. So used to them any other laptop seems cheap and plasticy next to it.

I personally would be happy with another Lenovo for business purposes.

And I see the X1 can be specced nicely.
2.7gHz CPU and 8GB RAM should be enough for a while

got the X1 last week. It is very very nice.

Now I just have to decide if I want to upgrade to a 600gb SSD - its only a grand after all.
