If HP open the device (assuming it's currently locked down) to those looking to install Android or other alternatives to WebOS, they could continue to sell them as is and have a device that is king amongst the Apple haters and open sourcerers!

The gen pop could probably live with webOS as default, for surfing and emailing.

I wonder if HP are still making some profit at these knock-down prices. If they are then they could get significant market share very easily by doing more of the same.
Feist - 1234. One camera, one take, no editing. Superb. How they did it

There are already rumours of more on the way.

As a one off thing, HP are writing off a billion dollars on this one. Their purchase of Palm was USD 1.2 billion. It's probably a bit more complicated than this, but in principle they'll save the tax on a billion profit made elsewhere by doing this.

Update: HP promises more cheap TouchPad stock

I agree. I hate the glossy screens, since I work with numbers most of the time, the matt screen is the only option.

So is the HP screen. It uses the same Gorilla Glass for the screen as the iPad and it's the protective finish on that that gives it the gloss.

Yeah, glossy is the bane of professional ITers. Can barely find a decent laptop or monitor without added reflections these days.

Even Dell's anti-glare coating on their recent high end monitors is getting a kicking for being too OTT.

I noticed this on the shiny new monitors that have just arrived at clientco. I can't use a camera to record the startup sequence without seeing an outline of myself during the dark screen bits.

                    Tripod it is then...

If only they would hurry up and mature the technology so the screen was in colour, had a quicker refresh rate so could do video, and could display a magazine full page.
That belies the entire point of the device.
