What are these problems that you are having? Have you considered asking your ISP what models they recommend?
Yes, Im familiar with what Im calling a router. I do not want a separate modem to go with the router. Why? Because its another link in the chain.

As for asking the ISP, yes I have. They recommend routers with the Broadcom chipset which was why I mentioned it as a point.

The issues Im having only started when my broadband provider migrated their service to a company called murphx (part of or owners of C&W). Since then and only then, Im plagued with a loss of 4meg in connection speed and frequent disconnects (up to 10 times a day).

I have raised numerous tickets but they say murphx technicians (their words, not mine) can find no fault and say its my equipment. I say that is bollocks because one, the problem only started when they migrated to murphx, two, I still have issues when plugged direct into the testsocket behind the NTE5 faceplate and three, lots of other people on the ISP's forum are complaining of the same issues and they're on different exchanges.

I've tried different filters, no improvement. I dont think my router a NetGear DG834N is at fault although it does sometimes drop the wireless connection and laptops etc cannot reconnect without a reboot.

Im familiar that the BT profile will lower speed with frequent disconnects. As I said, Im convinced the supplier is the issue but they wont accept any responsibility.

An SFI costs around £190 for 2 hours investigation if they cant find a problem attributable to BT infrastructure. Im not inclined to go for this when Im 90% certain its murphx who are at fault.

Seems to get good reviews. Its suggested there may be firmware issues with this router. Did you have any when initially setting it up?

Tad over 100 quid but if its performing well, I may stretch the budget a little more.

You still with ADSL24? This is a router they dont recommend on their service apparently!

Have you come across any issues?

Yes, still with ADSL24. No issues.

Where did you hear about the Vigor not being recommended? Linky? Thanks.

Draytek and zyxel are the cheap end of the market and generally the quality of what the ISPs provide as standard no issue with that as they generally work ok, i would generally recommend the netgear or linksys(cisco) again it all comes down to what you want to spend however they all do pretty much the same thing just with a few more fancy options and fittings in the more expensive models, regardless of this the first thing you should always do is update the firmware, just cos it came straight of the shelf at PC world yesterday does not mean it has not been sitting in a wharehouse in japan for 6 months, update it straight away

If you have changed you router and tried other models and still having the same issue then it is almost certainly your ISP or line at fault, its unlikely to be the line internally as you have patched to the main box (recently saw someone plug the filter into an extension lead adapter in the BT box worked ok to a point but would drop connection when using fat client app) also worth checking your line running outside (its amazing how many peple never seem to look at the bent old cable hanging of the side of the house) if your in an old house the cable could be as old as the house if its clipped to the wall the clips can rust and the cables can start to break down (its down to BT to change)

The exchanges are controlled by BT and they will make changes to them without bothering to tell anyone recently had a friend who was having problems with is connection 2 weeks and many phone calls to the ISP and an engineer visit to his house it turns out BT had made some changes to the local exchange and the ISP engineer had to gain access to get it put back correctly, i would suggest that if the problem started when the ISP changed then its down to ISP and i would be asking for an engineer to visit to see the problem your end if still no joy move ISP ASAP

I've had no problems; when I was setting it up for O2 broadband, I fired in a request for configuration info to the DrayTek support people and got an immediate response which got me going.

My previous NetGear DG834G modem/router suffered a hardware failure (according to NetGear support and still not convinced) which resulted in intermittent failure of the DNS function (could only access the Internet with physical IP addresses).

                Bolshie,

In the past year or so you've started a few threads related to ADSL problems, from what I've seen and from my own experience you're wasting your time and money swapping providers and equipment. Your telephone line is crap and no mater what you plug into it that wont change.

My ISP suggested paying BT to install a new line, in the long run I think that may be a better option though I'm loathed to pay BT to provide something they should already cover in the line rental. BT are tulips but what can you do?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Seriously, I've had all these issues. I've tried the Drayteks, Netgears etc... None worked reliably, the Draytek not at all. You owe it to yourself to get one of these, for £25 you have very little to lose. It hangs onto a bad BT line like glue.

Thanks. The 536 appears to have been superseded by the 546. However, unless Im mistaken, this isnt wireless (isnt mentioned anywhere on any advert I found for the router).
