ADSL modem/router reccomendations?

Need 8meg + 4 wired sockets + wireless.

PS Having the wires anyway don't want to go wireless only, always found all wireless devices of any description, routers, cameras, walky talkies, power controllers, all struggle to manage 10% of the "up to" range claimed. It is measured in outer space presumably. Wireless on our current router barely covers half the house.

Perhaps one for Technical rather than Light Relief?

Personally I'm a big fan of the Draytek Vigor range, but they ain't exactly the cheapest. Failing that the Netgear DG834 series are worth a look.

Draytek Vigor range. Period.

Have recommended to friends who have had problems with routers in the past, eg "dropouts", slow speeds, etc.

They have all got Drayteks and been hassle free ever since.

The best home router I ever did by. Well worth the extra pennies, and lots of useful features too.

I don't think you'd reget it.

There is some bitching about wireless drop outs on the net but I've not had any issues yet. But then I did scan to see what wireless networks were active in my area and used a channel a couple of steps out from all the other ones to limit the chances of interference

If you search CUK for my thread about Draytek towards the end last Autumn, you'll see that I had a bad experience recently with one. Draytek UK actually told me they were not suitable for noisy long loop lengths. I complained about the modem not synchronising and they said "Known issue, they all do that on bad lines, return it to EBuyer for a refund." So I did. I have tried multiple various flavours of Netgear 834 series with equally dire results. BT Voyagers were OK but 2 x hardware failures in 2 years.

So........... My current recommendation is Thomson Speedtouch.

Cheap - Yes.

Nasty - A bit.

Reliable - The jury is still out.

Hangs on to a bad ADSL line like the smelly stuff to a blanket - Definitely. Highly recommended by Bloggs ADSL Labs Inc.

I have twice had my BT Internet connection go AWOL for days or weeks, both times requiring hours of High Blood Pressure calls to Indian muppets. The first time I had a Netgear router, and the muppets stuck to the story that it must be the router, and I should call Netgear support. That experience was so bad that I bought a BT router. Next time when they asked me what router I had, I was able to say it was a BT router. I could almost hear their disappointment. It must have saved me several days and possibly an apoplexy attack.

Also, when your connection drops out and you have to reset, the BT router has an on/off button on it which makes this easier.

I wish I could find nicer things to say about BT other than that their seriously crazy support is not quite so Hellish if you have one of their own routers, and dropouts are so common that it's worth having a switch to fix them.
