    Website Critique Request

Well I've finally managed to get my arse in gear and I'm in the process of writing the updated version of my websites.

I would appreciate some critique on the following:

    http://test.lazeryattack.co.uk/

It probably doesn't work in IE properly as I have not checked it and I don't think i have cleared all the floats yet, but it should work correctly in most other browsers.

Any comments will be gratefully received, the layout is pretty much set and the majority of the CSS is written. I need to modify the link highlights for tabs so that the tab glows instead of a red line appearing, but it is pretty much there. I really want some feedback before I set it in stone as things are easy to change at this point, but will get harder and harder as time goes on....

(it is just the main page, any links from that page that work are a lucky co-incidence)

    Basically, let me have it....

    I had a look using FF3.0.5

    1. I had to scroll right to see the RHS menu options. There was a problem with the middle menu tabs - after Teamspeak Admin the tabs disappeared for a while and there was a lot of white space (may be why the tabs on the right got pushed over) - the problem may be the "Welcome to Lazery Attack - Premium Server Hosting" on the line below. Check your CSS.
    2. Your menu links (via main tabs and LHS tabs) have underlining - which is fine - but the underlining extends to leading spaces, so when you hover over the link it looks a bit odd. Not a capital offence, but better to sort it.
    3. I tried tabbing through your site and found that a Tab lands you in the middle of the username box. This may be a little disconcerting for people because as you type in the text appears to expand from the middle of the box. Also, if you continue to Tab it proceeds along the top level menu until the option after Teamspeak Admin when the cursor goes to the last menu option (far right) then proceeds back to the left.
    4. You do not appear to have a printer friendly, accessibility or help link on the page. Top right is a usual position for these options.
    5. I assume there was not meant to be any content in the black area next to the LH menus?

Not on my "proper" machine at the moment so I can't turn off Javascript etc.
These are just a few thoughts to start with. I can have a look tomorrow and try using IE 7 if you like?
Hope this has been of some use.

    Z.

Testing websites is not my area of expertise but I have had a quick look.

I am using FF3.5.5 on XP pro, as far as I am aware, everything is set as default out of the box.

      1. The page is slightly too wide to be shown all at once so I get the left - right scroll bar which is probably not what you intended.

      2. Is it possible to clear the username field automatically after I put the cursor into it with the mouse?

      3. You might want to think about the titles of your tabs "Lazmin" and "Transpeak Admin", will all visitors to your site understand them or whether they should click on them or not?

      Cheers.

I suppose I should also ask people to note the resolution that they use to look at the site Historically the majority of my traffic has been high resolution, so I've probably been a bit lax with catering for lower resolutions.

Weird tabbing order is down to the fact some of the tabs are floated right so what you see on the screen is the reverse of the order that they are really in, I need to sort out the tab path so cheers for that. Accessibility wise I've not really been planning anything special. If you turn the CSS off it should be readble and have various titles (that you don't see with CSS on), however I find text resizer's largely pointless. All modern browsers allow you to resize the text on the fly and most people who need larger text will be using either the default browser tool, or will have a customised style sheet increasing the size of text for them. IMHO as long as you don't set the text size to specific px you should be fine in this regard.

Cheers for all the comments so far, very useful, keep them coming

As you say doesn't render at all properly on IE8, bits of layout all over the place.

And since Internet Explorer is the most common web browser on the planet, isn't it a bit silly to neglect it?

Since it's also got the most bug-ridden layout engine it makes more sense to get it working in functional browsers first, then apply the few tweaks that IE requires to work properly.

Some of the tabs look a bit odd in ff3. Also noticed that the login pages aren't secure - should be using https anywhere a password or personal details are submitted.

Thought I'd see what IE6 makes of it.

Literally a random collection of shapes and text all over the place. We're talking 100% messed up.

                    Good luck!
