I remember being stunned at how easy it was to overclock my 7800GT video card - essentially just a button click to determine the optimum speed. Seems like the motherboard manufacturers are now savvy to this as well, making it easier to get more out of your system.

I'm thinking it may be time to hand my current desktop rig down to DS1, and build myself a new one...

Now the journey to establish the bleeding edge begins

I have to find out how fast it will run stabily.

4Ghz would be quite something on air cooling - looks possible though. Failing that you could always invest in a water cooling kit (with fllourescent additives of course) and a side window for your case

A good project runs 100% over budget.
So, start by negotiating budget with spouse.

Then go nuts reading rewiews on arstechnica, anandtech, toms hardware etc.

What memory did you go for? Just out of interest, not that I have an Excel spreadsheet open with a list of components and prices or anything like that
