Ask the party that receives goods to register for paypal or something like this - it works pretty well, though for large amounts bank transfer is probably better.

Surely you mean sending pounds that end up converted to dollars and hence bugger all arrives?

One can easily have multi-currency account at Paypal - very handy during these unstable days if you accept payments from abroad. So, in this case dollars (if you got them) can be sent without conversion penalty/commission.

Second Paypal, very easy to sign up and can be paid in any major currency. Just fill in email request, they send an email to other party, he/she clicks on link and pays by card, bank transfer or from Paypal account.
