Running a home server with a changing IP

Need some advice on running a home server on a changing IP address.

Got a domain name and I have ran it to my home server succesfully using zoneedit.com but it has become pretty flakey. MY IP changes so I have to use their client to update the forward when my IP moves. It seems to work then it will not a few hours later.

Does anyone know of an alternative to zone edit for DNS?

Have you looked at using a Dynamic DNS service such as DynDNS? Many routers have inbuilt support for such services, and will update them automagically when your IP changes.

Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

yea, I'm running znDyn on the server and I can see that it updates zoneedit.com OK but then I try to connect to the URL it only works about 20% of the time.

I suppose it is an alternative to zoneedit I am looking for.

I'm a developer and infrastructure scares me

did a bit of messing about and it seems to be working again, I expect it to fail though, see how it goes.

Must admit I know bugger all about DNS.

WHS - my wireless router is configured to automatically update DynDNS when it gets an IP address via the cable modem. Works for me

Not an option if the OP's ISP doesn't provide static IP addresses. (For example, Virgin Media don't.)

Switch ISP to one that does? Just a thought.

                  I have one.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

My Virgin Media IP address rarely changes. Maybe a couple of times a year max. Hardly worth worrying about.
