    Importing from Word to Excel

We have a Test Script Template in Word – around 500 of the buggers.

They all have TWO expected results.

    We need to:

    1. Merge both expected results to the one expected result
    2. Copy and paste set fields in the Word template to an Excel template that we are using to upload to Quality Center.

The area I am most worried about is merging the two expected results fields and getting this automated, given the 500 scripts with around 60 steps per script.

Quality Center needs one action with one results – as the tests are for two screens, they have two results, but we need to merge into the one expected result to be uploaded to QC.

    Any advice very welcome!

We need to upload his word test scripts into QC – anyone knowing their QC knows that getting the tests into a Excel template and exporting using the mapping grid is the way to go.

The con-tractor who professes to know QC insisted on using a Word template. Knowing it does not work well I said sure, go ahead, but you will have to work out the mappings which he refuses / can’t do.

He has 500 scripts to upload, advises this will take months ?!? A team of 4 will sort it in less than a day…..

Finally, he has TWO expected results per test step and asked me to re-write QC to cater for this!!

He is now doing phone a friend, and since suggested he has used Defects part of QC once…….
so you didn't tell him he was wrong then? and you cant fix it yourself..
or did he simply piss on your shoes and you shut up?

        Shoes are thankfully still dry......

He is actually wanting help to try to automate merging two Expected Results fields into one before uploading to QC. Good that he is actually asking for help I guess!

Other than that, he will have to manually tweak each and every script.

Personally, I would just get on and convert and do 18 hour days for a couple of days to get it sorted. Not this guys style though sadly - he is even trying to get a VBA expert signed off!

There has to be a mind blowing simple explanation to merging two fields, surely!

are you simply taking 2 table cells in word and wanting to merge them into 1 via automation?

how are you retrieving the data in the first place to the template?

                Okay, here goes......

The test scripts in Word are manual scripts all using the same template. As the Word upload to QC is a pile of kack, we are then copying and pasting into Excel, and then using the mappings to upload to QC using the add-on utility.

Word keeps hanging every time we tried it, so, we are sticking to Excel.

Therefore, two sets of sutomation would be fantasia....

                1. Merge the two expected results into the one, in the Word test scripts

                2. An easy way to copy and paste from Word to Excel template ripe and ready for the upload into QC.

The main sticking point is getting two cells in word merged for all tests, and not having to do this manually for all several thousand steps.

I did think of using the utility mapping into QC, ,but, when you allocate the mapping, it loses the option of re-using it.

If you can do this manually why not use sendkeys? I did a routine yonks ago where I converted 600 technical drawings into another format using sendkeys - If all you are doing is things which you can do using the menu options in the application they work ok - once you have developed the script
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

                  I preferred version 1!
