Unfortunately while there are far fewer attacks on Mac software they're far from unknown and there are less utilities available to deal with the attacks. Mac users have considered themselves attack immune for years, but sadly they're deluded.

Torrents are a great way to deliver virii, spyware, rootkits and any other sort of malware you can think of and an awful lot of PC owners lack any decent protection.

At a bare minimum you need:-
        Fully patched operating system
Completely up to date active scanning anti virus product with very frequent updates
Completely up to date active scanning anti spyware product with very frequent updates
Rootkit scanning on a frequent basis
Software firewall with sensibly secure rules
Hardware firewall at router level, again configured right

An advisable tool is a sandbox for running untrusted downloaded applications including codecs until you're sure how they perform and are safe to be let loose onto the actual system.

In addition a healthy dose of common sense is critical including not downloading loads of toolbars and addins for IE.
Thank you. I can't tick all those boxes, yet!

          You're entirely welcome.
I can PM you some application links gathered by an expert on another rather technical forum I'm a member of if you need recommendations.

That's more than helpful thanks. Really appreciated. Thinking this through, I am now convinced that the infestation was picked up on the laptop on holiday in Spain 2 weeks ago whilst using public wireless hotspots. We would not have had the benefit of a hardware router firewall out there. The laptop would only have had the Win XP SP2 firewall and Avast! anti virus running. Cheers

                    Bitter bitter bitter individual.

I always prefer productivity rather constant fighting with updates, virus checking etc etc etc...
