    Technical Question

First off...let me apologise to those that are going to complain that this question is either too technical, or not technical enough!

I have a videa that I would like to download as a video file. It is played on a website run by a news company. I have the link but it downloads to my temp internet files as a .DAT file, rather than a video file. I would like to convert this to a video file that I can play while offline as a promotional video. Can anyone recommend a utility that will download the .dat file and convert it to a video file that will play offline?

Thanks technical and non technical geezers!

Thread moved. As DiscoStu said - a link would be really handy to see how it all works and what can be done to grab them.

I don't know if it will work but the latest realplayer has a ‘download’ plug-in for your browser, whenever I'm on youtube when I hover over a video realplayer pops up and asks if I would like to download it? Not tried it though.

Have you tried just opening it with VLC?? Or renaming it to .mpg?

Yes. It did not work as it seems to connect to the STV site to get content. The link is on my home email so I will add it later....

Get a screen recording app and record the video area as it plays on the website.

Ah, one of those.. I recently did something similar (but it was an RM file).. You could try this software.. With my RM file, it showed me the URL to the actual .RAM file and gave instructions on how to download it.. Then I used some other free software to convert the downloaded file to MP3..
