    Vista virtualisation

I HATE VISTA!!! Tearing hair out trying to think why sound options work in dev version of new prog but not in installed version. Windiff kept reporting the user options files were different but when I checked actual file the content was not as Windiff reported.

Aaaaaagh. It seems that Vista virtualises writes to program files directory so when you think you are writing to a file it is being stuck away somewhere else. When you think you are reading it back it has been lost!!

Anyone found way round this problem? What directory can one save a file to that is present in MS windows 98/2000/xp and Vista? Could make a subdirectory in C: just to hold one 20 byte text file but that seems naff.

    Ta for any brill ideas.

You could save it in the temp directory - if it's temporary.

So you write to something in program files, close the file, read it back and you get something different? I can't see how that could work at all as otherwise no apps could store anything.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Mmm. Telling customers to switch to XP is not really an option for a commercial product.

App is written in .NET, which is total tulipe too. Overbloated, slow to instal (almost impossible to instal for the non IT type who have not kept their OS up to date with latest service packs) and slow running.

          ***tulipe?

Windows Vista has a SDK , which explain the reason for this. IF there were only time to read things like that ..

Yeh Vectraman's comment was right, it does actually work, saves to and from a file in appdata/local. The lack of sound I thought was down to incorrect options file is just the Vista local settings curse. It works fine if I switch to another user.

                Now have a different problem.

                Ta for all comments.
