It is my opinion that there should be a way to save the rote as a gpx and for my freind to upload to maps on her handy but I can't find the functionality for this. I can share the place names but they are in Welsh and very long so prone to error when she is typing them in as she is a non native English speaker. I suppose this will have to be the solution.Comment

Can you not just click on the 'Send directions to my phone' option. You will then be able to pick email/sms if you are logged in to Google and have those set. Then share that link with the person?Comment

If you are using Google maps for directions and you click under "options" you can "Send to your phone" including by email, and you get a shortened URL.
This is just a shorthand for the points you want to travel between. In fact, the URL when you are using Google Maps is the waypoints, you can copy paste.
