Dropping an SSD in is a solid idea. I had a similar issue with my old rig, where games started getting choppy after running fine for months. Upgrading to an SSD made everything run way smoother, from boot times to gameplay. Rolling back the GPU drivers could be worth a shot if you still have issues after that. I've had updates mess things up before, especially for older cards.
