I've ended up using Google sync & backup for now but it is 2-way. I downloaded a zip file, extracted it and realised all those files were now being uploaded... able to cancel but still annoying. I was sure DropBox or similar let you select folders as non-sync but allow manual retrieval of folders/files.

Usually you can extract the contents of a zipped file outside of the synchronised folder.

You can, but if you're not thinking about it... also on Mac the default when you double-click a ZIP is to extract it in the same folder.

User error but linked tot he fact syncing isn't what I want here, just downloading/uploading large files to Drive
