It worked for me on a 500GB USB SATA drive less than 2 months ago. What did you use to encrypt your partition? I would suggest trying it and DON'T try decrypt the partition if you are able to then access it. Get it on, get it off, get it out and get rid...

Truecrypt. Its actually a single massive file that works as an encrypted virtual drive.
Funnily enough, when The Wife (tm) did her masters, the same thing happened - cheap USB, no backup. Early on in project I'd got her to do daily backups and to email me with the critical files.
At uni I worked on a computer helpdesk we got this all the time. Mostly ladies coming in with the old 1.44MB disks that where literally falling apart with their entire 4 years' work + dissertation on it with no backup whatsoever. Cue many tears.
Of course I would offer a friendly shoulder to cry on at this sad time.
