    AMD or Intel

It has come to that time when I'm going have to ditch my trusty processoer (AMD 3200 64 - the socket 754 type) and buy a new one. What is the feeling as to which is best, Amd or Intel core Duo.

I was thinking of an Intel (first one for many years!) core duo 6600, a new board,2Gb ram and buying another nvidia 7600gs card to pair up with my existing one.

    I preferred version 1!

Core duo is top of the pile at the moment, but the AM2 athlon 64's have a better architecture and when they shrink the die they will probably have them running at about the same speed as the core duo's.

Secondly the AMD's are cheaper to purchase and cheaper to upgrade. I would personally go for AMD, but whatever you do do NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES buy a mobo with a VIA chipset. You WILL regret it if you do!!!

Core Duo seems to hold the advantage, even though AMD dropped prices big time - it is possible to get quad core from Intel for the price of dual core now, and most mobos that support core duo can be upgraded, which is nice future proofing because next few years will see massive shift to multi-cpu support in apps.

Having been firmly in the AMD camp for the past few years I'm tending towards Intel this time around. The last processor I bought was a socket 754 amd 64 3200 around 3 years ago and it has served me very well. It is about to be relegated into either my daughters PC or the simple server I'm planning to build. Most (infact all) write ups I have seen have sided with the Intel processors.

Any preferances for a m/board then? I would prefer a board with SLI so that I can dump another video card in with my existing one.

Lot's of sense on here so far.

My preference is for Intel CPU / Intel Chipset combination.

Second choice is AMD CPU and Nvidia NForce chipset.

VIA have raped me several times in the arse in the past so they're a no go.

Another post actually - anyone know a decent PC builder (price-wise) that shifts Intel kit? No dell, no HP, no crap from PC world either. Someone small who builds stuff using standard parts.

I'd do it myself but I can't be arsed with the whole process these days.

I got my PC from Overclockers earlier in the year. Good selection, good price and you can pick & mix (I didn't need a monitor...)

Alienware are quite good, no problems with my machine:

The bad news is that Dell recently bought them, however they shouldn't have had time to make a negative impact yet.

Overclockers are a good site, but generally available things are overpriced there - use dabs.com for that or someone else, for unique things they seem to be pretty good though, seems like a good bunch of people too.
