A simple line such as 'Wow if that is 10 days then I am certainly going to have a go at bagging you in another 30' or something of that ilk to make them feel desirable and wanted. How ever tempting lines such as '10 days? Hope you took out a yearly membership' are to be avoided.

Absolutely. I did a voluntary thing once when I was stuck in a van for ages with a couple of blokes who endlessly talked about football. After desperately searching my almost non-existent fund of sporting knowledge all I could think of to contribute was "Didn't that Danny Blanchflower have big ears?"
