I was thinking of setting up an internal forum web site so that users can discuss / share information etc. FYI there is budget for any forum software that is required. However I need

(1)Active directory integrated ~ Only internal AD users will access it.
(2)Hosted on premises at the customers site

Or do I just go with SharePoint which I know nothing about?

Suffer? its easy to use with reasonable functionality? So long as you spec it properly and don't overload it then its the easiest solution.

What about yammer (www.yammer.com) its like an internal Company Facebook but you can have groups, discussions, upload files etc

It's not LDAP though, so not sure if that would make it a non starter for you

I've been at a couple of places where they've used, its been ok as a collaborative tool

    No idea on cost though

Choose whichever seems to pay the highest rates to contractors.

All other suggestions are likely from disguised permies.

I hate to bring this all professional an'all, but if you have a complete list of requirements, it may help to post them. And if you don't have a list, get one.
