The limit on many laptops seems to be the memory. I specced a £4.5k laptop on pcspecialist which had 3x600MB SSD etc. but "only" 12GB RAM.

You can get up to 32GB (4x8GB) in the latest Lenovo & HP workstations. You're limited to 2 disks though, and "mobile" CPUs.

Have you seen the size of the thing? 419 x 286 x 67mm, and that's without a power supply inside. You could fit a regular ATX motherboard in there, with a couple of flexible risers so you could mount the graphics cards where you liked you probably could build something more powerful in the same space.

Probably not, as to my mind better would mean avoiding silly compromises like a 17" screen in order to make something you can (just about) carry from room to room before the battery goes flat.

If "portability" is a constraint then it would be a proper desktop on a wheeled trolley

Surely that is assuming the 6 sodimms at a maximum of 4gb a slot.

As you can now get 8gb sodimms for £50 a time £300 would allow you to hit 48gb assuming the bios doesn't do anything to stop that.

The memory controller on the CPU will limit you to 24GB. You need to go for the new i7 (tops out at 32GB) or the dual socket Xeons with registered memory to get over that.
