An Amazon assurance of 12 months warranty (but no extended warranty) on the refurbs is claimed on MoneySavingExpert here, which makes them look rather more attractive, assuming you get it in writing from Amazon themselves.

For northernladuk's benefit, the post gives no indication of who might have handled them previously.

So if it goes wrong within a year with the product i.e. it keeps crashing, battery drains too quickly - they will send you a brand new one. You have to send the old one back otherwise they charge you but it can all be done free of charge.

The old Amazon Kindle covers caused a few problems hence I had to use this service. They use Royal Mail Special delivery to send the Kindle out to you but a courier to return it to them.

Amazon customer service has been exemplary.

Kindle/e-reader for ordinary books (mostly text), iPad/other for tech manuals - Kindle is poor there. Haven't tried the larger and rare DX.

Refurb kindles are going for about £80 at the mo. Wonderful piece of kit, reawakened my dormant bookworm. Like others I've read more serious books in the past couple of months since I've had one than in the previous couple of years.

But do you still rest the 4kw electic fire on the edge to keep your toes warm?

Dont think you can with any of them really, thats why I still buy 50/50 print vs electronic as I read a lot in the bath so buy certain books especially for that.

I have an iPad and its undoubtedly a great bit of kit but if you are after a device to be used primarily for reading then the Nook/Kindle are your best bet, iPad would be overkill and not as good at that particular task (although it IS a pretty good reading device).

Its handy having a backlight on the iPad as a lot of my reading is in the dark at bedtime but you can get covers with lights for all the e-ink ones. Battery wise, the iPad is actually pretty good but as far as I know, the e-ink readers last ages on a charge.

I'd go a Kindle, but sure i saw recently (on engadget i think) that there was an offer on the Nook where they threw in £x worth of free books so i'd maybe check that out.

Edited - Ah, just looked up the offer i'd seen and it was you get 30 free books if you swap your old ebook reader for a Nook so no good for the OP.

    Brilliant.....
I do exactly the same and agree it is bloody ace.

The bottom line here is preference. Are you an avid reader or not? If you are a part time reader to pass the time of day then you Driod, Iphone Ipad is fine.

If you enjoy a good read anywhere then you need to seriously consider the Kindle. The e-ink think is bloody amazing and can be read in direct sunlight, which an Ipad can't. The kindle is incredibly light and you can hold it for hours and the battery just lasts forever. You will need a light source to read at night but mine has a built in light.

I took it to Egypt for the week on the family holiday as I don't do dawn to dusk sunbathing. Got myself a couple of cheap books, sat in the shade and read like there was no tomorrow. No worries letting the kids read it when they were bored and so on. Fabulous piece of kit.

Ipad, phone etc is fine for quick read to pass the time of day but for me Kindle wins hands down for holiday, travelling and so on. Might hurt spending the extra £100 if you have ipad but if you don't it is a bloody bargain. I would highly recommend a Kindle.
