you can walk into just about any news agent/corner shop in London and buy the SIM for cash, no ID required. Then you have the choice of registering it online and top up with your credit card, or with cash at said news agents/corner shops (still no ID required for latter).

You may have a shop up your way if you check the web site directory.

I’ve had a look on the net but I can’t get a definitive answer. Has anyone bought for cash a mobile without providing ID and having the thing registered?

The having to register PAYG SIM's was to prevent fraud. People used to buy a SIM card and top it up with stolen card details. Having to register the SIM means that if this happens, the phone company now can find out who did it.

Again, I think Tesco is your friend.

Don't they sell Sim cards over the counter? Then buy vouchers to top up.

I bought a phone off ebay, and then got a free pair of PAYG sims off T-mobile. But to get the sims I had to put in my name and address (because they were being sent by post), but a quick glance at ebay reveals pleanty of people selling PAYG sims with some free credit.

So I guess that would be anonymous, but I'm not sure if you can use it indefintely without having to register.

Have you got something to hide?

The latter. New phone, new number.

Just tell 'em you are HAB - they can look you up on linkedin.com to verify you!
