    PAYG mobile question

I’ve had enough of the rubbish 3-moblie I got years ago so I’m going to be in the market for a new mobile soon.

Being a right dodgy geezer I want to get an unregistered PAYG phone. I remember reading that the evil bastards are requiring people to register mobiles; is this active now? I’ve had a look on the net but I can’t get a definitive answer. Has anyone bought for cash a mobile without providing ID and having the thing registered?
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Can't you pick them up in Tescos these days?

It's the registered bit I'm worried about.

I can buy a phone almost anywhere, but when I get to use it do I have to tell 'em who I am, etc.

Are you just going to stick your old SIM card in a new phone or are you wanting to change your number with a new SIM?

If the former, just buy a phone off ebay.

If the latter, I think you'll need to pay by card or register.

The latter. New phone, new number.

            Oh bug**r!

I bought a phone off ebay, and then got a free pair of PAYG sims off T-mobile. But to get the sims I had to put in my name and address (because they were being sent by post), but a quick glance at ebay reveals pleanty of people selling PAYG sims with some free credit.

So I guess that would be anonymous, but I'm not sure if you can use it indefintely without having to register.

Have you got something to hide?
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Again, I think Tesco is your friend.

Don't they sell Sim cards over the counter? Then buy vouchers to top up.

The having to register PAYG SIM's was to prevent fraud. People used to buy a SIM card and top it up with stolen card details. Having to register the SIM means that if this happens, the phone company now can find out who did it.

The only option is to top up with vouchers you buy over the counter, if any networks still do them.......

I'm not a dodgy or a paranoid geezer, but when I looked at what they could see from my mobile phone (calls and location), credit cards, and Oyster card, it made me shiver.
