If it's not a virus defragment the hard drive - that is a memory error, probably caused by issues with your paging file (virtual ram on hdd), svhost.exe is the hosting service that runs other services (DHCP, DNS, SMB etc etc) as threads rather than individual processes.

Very probably a corrupted Windows update. Do you have automatic updates turned on?Originally posted by moorfield View PostCan anyone offer some advice ...?
I've been getting this error on Win XP startup recently, it's driving me insane.
svchost.exe application error at 0x00401000
I can track it as far as ntdll.dll. Much googling has not helped either.
All antivirus / firewall / malware apps are up to date and not reporting any problems.
Try turning it off, running a manual update and restarting.
If that doesnt help you can try this

Thanks - I'll give Housecall a try (have only been using AVG free up to now).

svchost thingy
I remember getting this a while back, although all virus/malware programmes on laptop uptodate and unable to fight it.
Went to Trendmicro website and launched their "housecall" cleanup which got rid of it.

I seem to have picked it up when I downloaded something from the web.it's worth a try.

A warning- I had a laptop do this unexpectedly after a holiday in Majorca back in August where I'd been connected through a WiFi service in the local area. When I clicked on "OK" it launched a virus/worm/whatever that hijacked my desktop and launched dozens of porno web pages. Leading up to this event I had been having intermittant trouble with the wireless LAN connection (in more than one WiFi area so not just a single WiFi hotspot and it also continued when i arrived home) which I think was also caused by the same infestation. Avast! partly caught the nasty when it launched but it was too late. The hard drive had to be reformatted. I recommend you do a "deep" or "thorough" scan with anti virus and malware applications instead of the "regular" or "quick" scans. HTH.

I suppose the usual applies:
What changes have you made recently? Any updates from Microsoft,
new software. updates on other software.
If you backup to the previous configuration do you still get this message?

Anything in the application or system logs?
What are you doing when the error appears? (Don't say making a cuppa)
Is it just when you run a particular app etc?
