At the risk of telling Granny how to suck eggs here, Avast! anti virus is free for personal use and I have yet to have a PC fall over in the last several years or so since using it. Recommended.

    Nope.

It is the box in work...

The one that has the CA virus checker & pest control...

Naughty pc is blessed with kaspersky...

That finds things & stops other things from doing unfortunate things.

CA appears to do bugger all really.

I might add that I've never pointed it at anything naughty... but then again, that site that Cojak found did unfortunate things to it... which were cured for a while when the CA pest patrol thingie decided that it might work for a while.

Thanks for all the help & suggestions chaps & chapesses...

The CA <spit> thingie is running, but I'm not convinced it's doing much.

Since it's the vac, there's a dearth of people around who actually know more about this stuff than the little I know...

I'm in the process of reinstalling drivers and stuff...

I'd forgotten what a joy a VIA chipset is...

Suggest you also download the Sasser removal stuff from Microsoft..Oh yeah..have a firewall running or download it from a uninfected PC. You'll have to run the fix with the PC disconnected from the internet or you're bound to get it again...and its fast! First time I connected my PC to the internet on dialup here-I got infected before the setup even finished!

That'll clear it out. I'm almost sure its Sasser.

If you continue with Win 2K install does it offer recovery option?

I have a feeling in my bones that its made it to your boot sector.

Hmm...Now if only there was a Linux Live CD distro that could read Windows partitions so you can overwrite the exe and dll...

Can you not even get to the login screen and stop the shutdown cycle?
Not even with f8 an start at a command prompt?

Yikes. I think you might be finished there.

Download the dll, boot up with Win PE or Barts CD and attach a USB drive, copy over the DLL. Job Done...
