3080 GPU and above laptops advice

I've not spent that much on laptops in total in over 15 years!

For anyone else in the same situation we went with a ACER Nitro 17 17.3" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 9, RTX 4070, 1 TB SSD

I would have prefered a LENOVO Legion 5 16" Gaming Laptop - Intel® Core™ i9, RTX 4070, 1 TB SSD as it has the Core™ i9-14900HX Processor which beats the Ryzen 9 in all but IGPU stats and is overclockable but they didn't have one in to look at and the difference of raw processing power was negligable.

Compiling his code was taking over 15 hours on his old one so interested to see what difference it makes. Certainly made the pocket a bit lighter. I've not spent that much on laptops in total in over 15 years!

I am sure it will have increased in price to over3k when it comes to any future new company buying the asset from me

Your problem is going to be that a 3000 series laptop is going to be old and probably showing signs of age / abuse.

So I would be looking at a 4000 series but they won't be cheap - equally it's going to be gaming laptop because those are the ones with 4000 series chips otherwise you are looking at industrial chips with way more complex naming / numbering conventions.

Asus actually build decent gaming laptops as do Alienware (Dell) - avoid Razer as all the one's I've had have been a piece of crap and have literally been the only computers I've had to send back for repair.

one thing that may or may not be important is GPU memory - can you find out if memory is that important..

He said over 8 gig of VRam if possible.

Eldest is doing a Masters in Robotics and has been told he needs a laptop with a GPU as some of the code he's running is taking 15+ hours on a normal latop. Uni have been a bit vague with specs and all they have suggested is Nvidia 3080 as entry point, 3090 better and maybe 4070 but not 4090. These things seem to retail from £600 to over 3k. All marked as gaming laptops. I don't think he needs the biggest screens as he won't be primarily playing games and has to lug it around.

He is eyeing up a PhD after but not sure if any sponsorship or whatever they get will include kit.

Anyone running anything hefty they'd recommend or know what to look out for?
