Does the checkbox for optimise iPhone storage not sort this out? So it will download what thumbnails it can, but automatically delete them if needed for other stuff you want to store on your phone?
I've got this setting ticket on the iPhone and iPad and occasionally seen the "device nearly full" type message but never actually run out of space so i'm guessing its working as it should?

I'm on iOS 10.1 and all through the beta cycle battery life has been the same as 9 for me, even the early betas which are always notorious battery eaters....

I have exactly the problem of the OP, and have spent the morning trying to figure out how to get into my icloud storage, I have been backing up to one drive for a while now but want to see if I can find a video of my late friend who was killed in a motorcycle accident. I filmed him playing his guitar shortly before and his son would like it. My last hope is that its in icloud but how the hell are you supposed to get in there, my phone tells me I have over 50 videos stored in icloud but getting at them ? The 5s keeps telling me the local storage is full. I would love to get my 2000 pics, and 50 videos out of icloud and onto onedrive which is more user friendly but is that possible ?

Have a look at Settings > Battery and see what apps are destroying your battery life.Originally posted by cojak View PostAnd not only that, I've noticed that since the iOS10 upgrade, the battery life is rapidly being sucked from my iPhone 6 like nobody's business.
Lasy month I could go a couple (or more) days, just listening to the radio or iTunes, now I'm just lasting the day.
I suspect that the next upgrade will reduce it further...
Background app refresh can also get turned back on when they do an iOS upgrade, so you may need to reset them.

+1. And since my phone is only just over a year old I really will seriously look elsewhere next time. At least my iPhone 4 lasted 3+ years...Originally posted by Einstein Jnr View PostAs for the battery life, as cojak says it has gone to shhh. It's no longer making it through the day - just when I thought that was finally behind me and stopped carrying a charger.
For the price I'll just have to accept phone upgrades every 18 - 24 months (which I hate...).

Right, apparently you can create folders on iCloud Drive. This need to pull down my photos from iCloud and then upload them to the folder on iCloud Drive. When I delete from the phone it will delete from iCloud but not iCloud Drive. I have not found a way of moving them from iCloud to iCloud Drive without going local which is crap really since there are already there.

She would never buy another one now, it only works some of the time now, if at all.
i.e. one of the upgrades totally spannered it

Exactly that, IMO.Originally posted by Fred Bloggs View PostI suppose this is all about Apple wanting you to continually upgrade the phone to one with more storage? I also suppose this is also why Apple phones and pads do not have SD card slots?

If course it's not easy, it's fecking Apple.
My other half had similar issues, we ended putting the photos elsewhere, before deleting from the iPhone.
Over the years, I've dealt with IPods, iTunes, transferring between Apple devices......
and I've never owned an Apple device personally
"Can you have a go, cos you work with IT"
Not impossible, but, a right pain in the ring, so you can keep Apple, all day long as far as I'm concerned.Last edited by MrMarkyMark; 25 September 2016, 18:28.

This is why I ended up getting Office 365, with the 1Tb of One Drive space. My camera roll is set to auto sync to One Drive, I delete any photos off of my phone or iPad that I don't want, yet if I ever want them back I can save the, back to my device.

iPhoto / iCloud is one of the things Apple got badly wrong, it's not intuitive or flexible and there is no easy way to fix it.Originally posted by Einstein Jnr View PostI like the fact that my photos sync across devices and are backed up on iCloud. Now my iPhone 6s has run out of space and want to clear up some of the photos/videos to make space.
Apparently if I delete them from my phone, they will automatically be deleted from iCloud. Additionally as I have them optimised for my phone, which means a lowere res copy is stored on the phone and original on iCloud - thus I cannot scrape the pictures off the phone to a hard drive or something.
I am going through forums and it looks like it's not going to be easy. Ideally you want a button that says "delete from phone and not iCloud".
I *believe* that you can delete the photo from the camera roll in the phone and that will free up space without removing it from iCloud but you might want to test that. I don't use iCloud or iPhoto so I could be wrong. Personally I use Drop Box with shared folders for everything, once it's uploaded it's still available and you can delete the originals from your phone.
