This means that the current 3°C “feels like” -6°, which seems a little harsh and suggests the expected high of 5° won’t be much better - though it looks like the breeze might have eased off a bit by then. Tea has been some Turkish leftovers with chips and ketchup

To go with this, the latest episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody about an already convicted prolific child rapist, a number of new victims having come forward since he was banged up. So it wasn’t really in the spirit of the title, being more than 24 hours and not in the custody suite; but he got an extra five life sentences to add to the ones he already had, so that’s OK

That’s Monday out of the way!

I’ve been working on a thing that lets you drill down into an extremely large dataset, aggregating values at the top level and then letting you expand rows to see the breakdown; there’s about twenty columns and you can go down seven levels, with thousands of rows if you were to expand the whole thing. Last week, I spent a bit of time adding a loading indicator, as it could take two or three seconds for the data to load when you expanded a row. Then I set to work optimising the data retrieval and by this afternoon, I’d got it loading so fast that most of the time, your visual cortex doesn’t register the presence of the loading indicator before the new rows appear

I got home about 10 minutes before the plumber turned up (they were very early). The chap took one look at the boiler, asked me what the problem was, then said he'd send in a quote. Done and gone in under five minutes.

Oak Island nutjobbery: off to the EUSSR again again. One assumes that the Garden Shaft remains as full of water as ever & will never be discussed or even mentioned ever again.

Grey start again, though no rain this time. Slight breeze though, so the current 6°C “feels like” 2°, and presumably much the same ting will happen to the day’s high of 7°. The barometers are much of a muchness at 987/995mB

I see I forgot to sign off last night, which probably explains why I had such an unsettled night. Anyway, the days’s and evening's viewing was some wildlife stuff plus a bit of the C5 surgeons thing

And in Berlin, the Russians have launched their attack, though Zhukov has struggled because a hill was steeper than he expected. This was partly the fault of Stalin though, who’d kept him so busy in Moscow that he hadn’t had a chance to visit the location in question when drawing up his plans, as he normally would have done

Anyway, this means it’s possible the Soviet forces to the south of the city might make it first - though, unbeknownst to them, Stalin has specifically directed them on a course which will take them straight to the Nazi’s main nuclear weapons research centre in the southeast of the city, where he’s hoping they’ll be able to grab a load of uranium oxide before the Americans get a sniff of it

The drive twixt and tween home and Mum's was uneventful. On getting home, I got a reasonable parking space which will be lost when I go to the office tomorrow.

The kitchen isn’t being completely neglected though: a wholemeal loaf is in the process of becoming in the breadmaker

Dinner is prepped, a variation on Ottolenghi chicken with preserved lemons. Seed bread is prepped, to go in the oven at the same time as the chicken tagine.
Last night’s film entertainment was “Don’t Look Up” from five years ago. Funny, but also a lot of similarities to US politics right now.
On the joblist for this afternoon is to try to work out why the number keys have stopped working on my Zagg iPad keyboard. Very frustrating.

NF was celebrating the opening of his windows by opening the windows a lot, though the cold was a bit offputting.

A glorious time. After years of suffering, the relief was tremendous!
