Monkey Life and other wildlife things were on today

And tonight I started reading V for Victory by Lissa Evans, set in 1944, about a Hampstead boarding house landlady who's guardian to an orphaned teenage boy - except it seems she has, with his collusion, stolen the identity of the relative of his she’s supposed to be (who was killed in an air raid), for reasons that are not yet clear

This evening, I finally decided to splash out on the new iPhone 18 Pro Max. It won’t get here until mid-October though

It took ages though; the app kept switching back and forth between “rider at the restaurant” and “rider on way to restaurant” for nearly an hour before anybody actually bothered collecting the food and bringing it to me

At least it wasn’t cold. I assume that in a fast food place like that, they don’t actually put the order together until somebody’s there for it

Tonight’s major motion picture premiere was one I’d been meaning to watch for a couple of years or more but kept forgetting about: Fast X (2023). This is the tenth The Fast and the Furious film, and they seem to have abandoned the notion of thinking up tricksy titles (such as The Fate of the Furious for the eighth one, because “fate” rhymes with “eight”; geddit?) in favour of a more minimalist and Romanesque approach. It was much as one would expect: the IMDb “Trivia” section notes that the word “family” is said 56 times, and other than that it’s a lot of fast cars and stunts. The ending was, I assumed, going to feature the usual barbecue; but it turned out the film didn’t end - it finished on a cliffhanger, and then had a post-credits scene introducing a major sub-plot for the next one! A bit presumptuous, as it turned out, because although I keep seeing online chatter about everybody being keen to make the next (and final?) one, it doesn’t seem to be happening yet. Oh well, there’s already plenty of them to be going on with

And then a rewatch of Sucker Punch (2011) because it’s excellent

Finally, I decided to give the third episode of Dark Matter (TV Series 2024– ) a go. I’m still not wholly convinced about this series, but it's going in some interesting directions so I’ll let myself be strung along a bit further

It’s turned overcast and gloomy out there now

I’m concerned about our blackbirds. I don’t recall seeing them for several weeks, and they’re usually in and out of the hedge quite frequently. It’s possible the hot weather was too much for them. Or maybe they’ve moved, either going in search of water during the hot spell, or finding somewhere with autumnal food. And, at least in theory, they could have migrated - apparently Scottish ones are known to spend the winter in Ireland, where it’s less chilly. But that’s not as likely, and I don’t recall them vanishing for long spells like this in previous years, though it’s possible I just didn’t notice

Woke around 7.30 with a headache. At around 8.30 I took some tablets which made no difference at all. It's since eased up enough that I can see without squinting.

Sunny day for a change, though with little wispy bits of cloud here and there that somehow convey the idea that it’s a bit autumnal out there. It’s not too bad for the time of year though: currently 15°C (but “feels like” 12°) and aiming for 18°. The barometers are back up a bit at 1001/1009mB

I awoke just after seven, which was clearly earlier than necessary, so I went back to sleep. I then awoke again a little before nine and was still dozing, planning to get up but feeling there was no rush to do so just yet, when I woke up for real - that had been a dream concocted by my subconscious mind to save me from reality, and it was actually just after ten

Meanwhile on the 4th of April 2020, between 17:32 and 19:35, NF was doing the mundane laundry, LM was neg repped by Brillo's new mate whilst some miscreant in Bandung was attempting to hack her Twatter password, MrMarkyMark popped in, as did scruff and I, whereas the tossers in Cardiff had decreed from on high that we were only allowed out once per day. They hadn't got around to banning the sale of socks and underwear yet. Oh, and everyone was drinking more alcohol instead of using it as antiviral hand cleanser. .

Entertainment: Alaska Homestead rescue thing: 2 hour one: making a fish processing thingie, during which our hero nearly turned a caterpillar tracked digger over a low cliff whilst improving a road and then had to quarantine for a fortnight due to possible plague exposure, it being 2020. Inneresting enough: they even found some placer gold.

Tea: chicken in white sauce etc. Entertainment: PM. <click> Ancient Aliens <click> Scotland's Island 6/6: Sky and Raasay with Paul Murton (not that one).

Calum's Road on Raasay built by Calum MacLeod using a pick, shovel, & wheelbarrow over a period of 10 years because the council wouldn't extend the road 1.75 miles to his hamlet so he built it himself.

Tonight’s motion picture premiere was a Swedish disaster movie: Avgrunden (2023) though Netflix insist on calling it The Abyss, presumably because they don’t think enough people know Swedish, which may be a fair point. It’s about a small mining town in Sweden where the ground suddenly begins giving way after blasting triggers the collapse of a hitherto unknown, yet vast, underground cavern. It was pretty good, I thought

And then I finished reading Their Finest Hour and a Half. An excellent book, and now I shall have to rewatch the film, and also read more of Lissa Evans’ books

Oh wait, they can check if it’s working with an app on their phone, and now they’re showing you CCTV of you watching 23 other people buy tickets from it while you waited for the train

Another week done!

Lunch never happened, because I popped down to Not-as-Big Sainsbury’s and did the shopping instead

I did get some things I could snack on while working, but got distracted trying to finish the thing I was working on. Then we had a meeting with a user who needed to get some kind of report out of the system on the regular. It became clear that everything she needs is already there but restricted to a very small group of top-level admin staff, which means she has to ask one of them to download it and send it to her. I suspect other restrictions would be adequate for securing the data and it was only done that way because it was easy, so now we have to ask the admin people if that’s the case; given that they have no problem sending her the data when she asks, there seems no good reason why she can’t just download it herself and save everybody some hassle

Then we had the all-devs meeting, followed by the team devs meeting; I managed to grab a cup of coffee and a few ginger nuts during the first of these, to tide me over

And that was the end of the day, except I’d somehow managed to finish my thing as all this was going on and wanted to get it pushed up and ready for review

It’s a simple utility function, known as a management command in Django, that generates Markdown documentation of all the other management commands in the app, and optionally writes it out to a COMMANDS.md file in the root of the project. This was inspired by the ludicrous business a few weeks ago when I spent several days trying to work out how to fix some data that was a bit off, only to find that there was a command to fix it just sitting there in a place I’d never looked. There are several dozen of these commands scattered around the app, and now they’re all documented in one place so I have a better chance of finding one when I need it. And because of the way these commands are surfaced by the system, the command that generates the docs automatically includes documentation of itself in there, which has a nicely recursive feel to it
