So twin A was in a car accident last week (stolen car hit her) which means she needs to find a new car. She's fine btw just a couple of bruises.

I'm trying to work out if VW's direct to consumer brand (heycar.com) is stupid enough to combine multiple offers together because it seems I can buy a car from there for less than they go for at auction...

Cheapest one elsewhere is £13,500 and yet they have a couple at that price. There is than £1450 in discounts and because it's VW 2 years warranty and servicing included.

Morning all

Cloudy and damp. Looks like it rained overnight. Weather app says it's foggy, I disagree. Currently 14 degrees with a high of 17 expected. Rain forecast from lunchtime onwards. Barometer down to 1013 mBar.

In the hairdressers this morning getting the greys painted over. When I used to live at this end of town, the salon was a five min walk away and I could easily work a visit into the day. Now it's a 25 min walk (not much faster on the bus due to service intervals) and that adds sufficiently more time to the appointment that it's just easier to block a half day out.

A grey start, perhaps even trying to be foggy, but dry, such conditions being expected to persist through the day. Quite mild with it at 12°C and aiming for 17°; the barometers are wary though, being down to 1001/1009mB

Lots to do today but, importantly, no need to rush! I'm putting a beef and Guinness stew on in the slow cooker, then shifting a load of boxes down to the car. Those can then be delivered to the storage place en route to Big Sainsbury's

Meanwhile on the 24th of November 2019 NF had breakfast for tea, in the form of a nice fryup, whereas I was busy watching yet more BTVS & Angel, including the commentaries, followed by opening a bottle of port, getting all maudlin and watching "Correcting Xmas", stating that I wasn't driving anywhere for Xmas that year, which was correct because it took place in Cardiff with a big preXmas meetup, which was planned to transpire again the next year but the bat plague intervened to prevent it.

Morning all
Very heavy rain blew through last night, lashing down from about 11pm in waves.
As I got up to take MMtSH out for a walk earlier, I got full wet weather gear on. It didn't rain on our walk.

Good news is that the hedge cuttings from yesterday (which I had brushed to the side of the lane like a good neighbour does) have now been washed about 200 metres down the lane, and probably into the cattle grid of a rather odd couple.

I read a chunk more of Falling tonight. It's pretty good; a few paragraphs here and there that could have been trimmed or omitted, but that's not unusual for a first novel. Well plotted so far though, and she keeps the story moving

Friday tomorrow, so I shall do things that are a nuisance to do while working and a pain to do on weekends

Much drama this evening. I got locked in my flat. Yes, in.

Upstairs is on holiday and his cousin popped in to water the plants. They deadbolted the communal front door, to which I do not have a key.

I only discovered this when Waitrose arrived and I couldn't open the door.

Landlady had to contact the lad upstairs (turns out he is in Greece) to get the door unlocked and I had to ask Waitrose lad to leave my shopping, do his other deliveries and come back for the crates.

The sash windows out front have those annoying security bolts for which I have a tool that isn't quite the right size but works sufficiently well enough if you have time and are not at risk of dying. So I got those off and the shopping in while waiting for the door to be unlocked.

HWMBO is an unhappy bunny about the H&S issue the deadbolt presents but I'll deal with that another day.

We had mortice locks on the front and back doors at my old place, and at one time there was a couple in the ground floor front who were always having massive rows and even fights. One Friday night she locked the front door to keep him out, which I found out when I came home from the pub. I didn't carry those keys on me but I was able to get in the back way and unlocked it.

I told the landlord about it and he was horrified; he explained that nobody was supposed to use those locks because the doors were fire exits. I did ask him why, in that case, he gave us the keys, and he argued that it was better that way as we could unlock them if somebody else did lock them

Incidentally, it turned out that of the couple downstairs, she was bigger than him and started most if not all of the fights

The landlord evicted them a few months later after she'd chucked him out again and he smashed a window in the front door to let himself back in

Tea has been chunky breaded haddock with chips and beans

Accompanied by yet another new episode of Traffic Cops

Expensive day today. The wife's car went in for a new under tray (£232 fitted), and there's another £1,300 of repairs to be done to it. (I rejected the Audi Stealer's price for new front tyres and new front brakes "your brakes are 60% worn" and "your tyres are down to 3.8mm")

Then to top it off, one of the local farmers was out trimming the hedge on a field, so I got him to do our front hedge. 20 minutes to top and front 30 metres of hedge, for £40. If I do it with my petrol cutter it takes 2 days and produces a lot of waste. He flails it with the tractor arm and all that is left is shreddings.

Another week done!

I carried on for an extra thirty minutes or so as there was something that wasn't working, and the others had to go. Once I had the relevant bits set up locally and could make use of PyCharm's Docker integration, I sorted it out very quickly. I'm always surprised at how many developers seem to think debugging involves looking at things and trying to figure out why they don't work; I've always taken the approach of using every debugging tool at my disposal and getting inside the machine to see what's really going on as opposed to what I think should be going on, and it saves loads of time

My aunt texted me this morning asking if Mum was eligible for any Alzheimer's trials. Because her conclusion after forgetting her sister existed for the past two years is that she now needs to interfere in her care. I will be charitable and assume that this is her just trying to be more involved and scratching around for things that might help.
