Nice enough overall, though I think I need to practice both recipes a bit more and maybe adjust various quantities

This was accompanied by the start of a new series on 4, 999: What Happened Next. It does that mildly annoying thing of switching back and forth between two entirely unrelated cases, presumably so we don’t get bored, but it’s quite interesting. A respectable middle-aged bloke claims the car thief he stabbed “ran onto” the knife he was carrying, and a young woman says she's being stalked by her ex who set fire to her car - but maybe she's stalking him and ripping him off, depending on who you believe. I suspect the ex is doing himself no favours by repeatedly telling the police how useless they are in his interview

And there’s a bedding wash on. The washer-dryer has just sent me a message to say it’s finished washing, so I need to decide whether to split the load for drying. Don’t think I’ll bother; it’s only a fitted sheet and four pillowcases

An uneventful day. Nightmare business user with dodgy Swiss client doing UAT her own way. Not helped that the IT lead said that the project wouldn't provide test scripts and it was up to the business to decide what their acceptance criteria were, and to test to that. Fair enough (not the way I'd do it) but business user also didn't document anything then said "I need stuff to be changed" which came across like a change request not an issue to be fixed. Also, the business user didn't understand that dummy data used to test won't be included in production and banged for 10 minutes about how shed asked multiple times for the data to be removed.

Lunch was a hastily-eaten roast beef bap (wholemeal)

The reason for the haste, and for being unable to record this fact earlier, was that somebody - not me - had messed up the meetings and only left us thirty minutes for lunch

And I was very busy the rest of the day as I brought my code into contact with real data, where it immediately encountered an anomaly it hadn’t seen before and did strange things. It turned out this was a known issue with some legacy data from last year, but the developer who knew about it has left and it hadn’t occurred to anybody else to mention it, if they’d even remembered. Anyway, I quickly worked out a way of dealing with it, and got that done this afternoon

Curious, rather than Foyle's War S6 E2 "Killing Time" being broadcast S1 E2 "The White Feather" showed up. Maybe someone had finger trouble or the subject of Killing Time was thought too offensive for us delicate watchers of ads for Easy Cremation. .

Book. End of book, it being shortish with suitably big print.

In spite of the greyness of the overwhelming gloom, briefly lifted with some sunshine, I could have done the washing today.

It’s yet another cloudy and breezy start, with additional emphasis on the breeze today. This means that the current 3°C “feels like” -6°, which seems a little harsh and suggests the expected high of 5° won’t be much better - though it looks like the breeze might have eased off a bit by then. Rain is due this evening (60-75% chance). And the barometers are hunkering back down at 983/991mB

Tea has been some Turkish leftovers with chips and ketchup

To go with this, the latest episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody about an already convicted prolific child rapist, a number of new victims having come forward since he was banged up. So it wasn’t really in the spirit of the title, being more than 24 hours and not in the custody suite; but he got an extra five life sentences to add to the ones he already had, so that’s OK

That’s Monday out of the way!

I’ve been working on a thing that lets you drill down into an extremely large dataset, aggregating values at the top level and then letting you expand rows to see the breakdown; there’s about twenty columns and you can go down seven levels, with thousands of rows if you were to expand the whole thing. Last week, I spent a bit of time adding a loading indicator, as it could take two or three seconds for the data to load when you expanded a row. Then I set to work optimising the data retrieval and by this afternoon, I’d got it loading so fast that most of the time, your visual cortex doesn’t register the presence of the loading indicator before the new rows appear

I got home about 10 minutes before the plumber turned up (they were very early). The chap took one look at the boiler, asked me what the problem was, then said he'd send in a quote. Done and gone in under five minutes.
