    i went for a job in an architects gaff. The IT manager asked me some general questions then showed my a real problem with an sql query.
    He got me a mega ham salad barm while i fixed his query.
    Mega impressed, he hoiks me into the bosses office. everyone was happy

    then he says to me quietly £350 a day is a joke, we both know that. what will you do it for really ?

    Quite simply, if they leave the interview with the impression that you are "better" than they are (in some fuzzy, not only technical sense (could be better looking, could be better dressed, could be brand names on your CV, could be more articulate)) then you get the job, otherwise, you fall prey to the pet prejudices of the most senior interviewer and they backwards rationalise the rejection (usually to a failure in some niche technical area that could be learned within a single day) .

    The more I look at the way humans treat each other in different settings (governments, companies, interviews, dating, the playground etc), the more it all looks exactly the same.

    If I feel the interview has gone well, then it generally has; if I feel the interview didn't go well, then it generally hasn't. The latter is rarer than the former.
