Its the current trend. Parents are supposed to provide everything for their children. Especially houses as they can never afford to buy on their own.

My in laws are lovely. They love taking us out for dinner and paying, its a challenge to do it the other way but we manage it occasionally. They are always offering to lend us money if they think we need it (we rarely do, they lent us some money to buy the first house).

FIL will always help out when I'm doing big DIY (he is in his 70's so for anything strenuous we avoid telling him till its done).

MIL loves cooking & shopping with the Girls.

They have one failing, their house is as clean as an operating room, they do think we should keep the same standards with 8 kids in the house most days.

Yes mine have always been very proud that I went to uni and did alright for myself in my career. They aren't doing to badly themselves, my dad followed my example and went contracting a few years later, although he's back as a permie now he's past retirement age and collecting his pension as well, so we tend to take it in turns to pay for dinners, whoever offers first the other always accepts so there's no arguments.

They are ever so generous with the grandkids but then grandparents generally are if they can afford it. More important than the money is the thoughtfulness they put into it, they really put the effort into choosing their gifts wisely and pretty much every one is a massive hit. They have all the time in the world to spend with them as well, my mum would live here if she could. It's a great comfort knowing I've got a family like that, and a fantastic male role model in my dad, to help take care of them once I'm gone.

Back in our days of being young & poor she would help out (unasked)

She is always polite, kind and was so very proud when I got qualified

But don’t get me started on going out for dinner: I mean we practically have to drag her out of the house as she “doesn’t want to get in the way as we both work hard & life is for being together” and as for paying for said dinner I have worked out that the only way to pay for it is to pre-pay when booking or there could be a scene at the table. !

Oh & cars: ye gods the one time she nearly shot me was when I offered to take over paying for BGG’s car insurance & was told very politely (but in a cold, firm sort of way) that She has always paid for his insurance & will continue to do so.

She is lovely & I love her.

    Bloody hell. Can I swap?

My MIL will plonk herself down, order her food then not twitch when the bill comes. Never even offers ever.

Even if we go into a coffee shop she'll just go and sit down and wait to be asked what she wants.

The other day wife forgot her purse and she had pay (albeit only in harvester). First time she'd paid for years and it was only £20 or so I think. Strop lasted for weeks over that one.

The strange thing is that if I'm by myself with them they don't mind me paying for three meals. When its everyone for reasons unknown they do..

As for my MiL she's lovely. Little cash but will merrily babysit whenever desired assuming its vaguely plausible. Its a good job too as she's babysitting for 10 days in September....

I never got to meet my mother or father in law (or out law, as we're not actually married), they both died before I met ms doodab. Sad as it sounds I'm kind of glad of that in a way.
