    I thought a symposium these days was a meeting of specialists discussing some arcane topic.

    If so, I'd mug up like mad on your relative's speciality, and try and come up with some novel development, because they may expect you to give a presentation.

    Seriously, another meaning is simply a convivial party or in this case a kind of secular memorial meeting, which I guess shouldn't be too demanding.

    OOI, what was your relative's speciality if that isn't slightly compromising your anonymity?
