    My Mac has to restart after updates. So does the Linux webserver used for a project I am involved with.

    forcing restart on certain updates even Compaq ASE + HP UX needed a restart for some updates.


    For Microsoft the number of restarts has dramatically reduced and if you plan your patches correctly it can be once a fortnight.

    if they have Microsoft "Super huge Enterprise management with knobs on" properly set up then you can set it to fire at a specific time with a couple of days warning. I tend to think oh yes I'll install that when I finish this and go make a tea, so long as I remember to do it I find it fairly low maintenance.

    Microsoft got enough money to developer tulipy new UI and then try to shove it down throats of their own paying customers, yet they don't have skill/money to do patches without restart, ffs - look at what Linux people are doing!

    Don't you just know it.

    They seem to have random, forced, overnight reboots here. Sometimes with a warning sometimes without.

    Really annoying when you come in the next day to pick up something you were doing the day before to find all you diagnostic tools etc have gone...
