MPs represent local population - if they live in an area where council clerks are then they should learn how to live like their electorate: expenses in London are compensated.
Average people live everywhere Alex. It's kind of the point. MPs are supposed to serve and represent their constituents, not emulate them. What use are MPs who only know what it's like to be poor or average to everyone who is not either?
You're simply talking out of jealousy and socialist spite rather than reason.
A good solution is to house them in HMP Pentonville. Bus them into work (the houses of parliament) every day and drive them home at night in time for roll call.
No need for a mortgage again.
They built that huge hotel on the roundabout, that would have been a good opportunity.
They sold off the Guards barracks, good opportunity.
both could have housed overnight MP's and foreign dignatories.
the average salary is for a clerk in the council answering calls about council tax. An MP should not be distracted about whether they can make their mortgage payment.

For which home?
And why do married couple MPs need at least 2 homes each?
£65k is 3 times the average UK salary, and most people don't get expenses paid.

And it says a lot that an entrepreneur considers £65k an aspirational salary.
£65k is 3 times the average UK salary, and most people don't get expenses paid. MPs tried to hide their expenses and it was only due to leak that people have learnt the kind of stuff they got paid, frankly not enough of them went to jail at the time for it.
You really think they give a flying monkey's dick about what the public thinks?
Of course they do, if only selfishly because it's pretty horrible being in a position where everyone hates you.
A politician is now a job, people study to become politicians whereas before people became politicians to help the people.
They still get into politics to change things (even if that idealism evaporates) but nowadays it's seen that studying politics is useful if you want to be in politics.
