    One large asteroid came very close (within a few thousand miles, far closer than the moon) a couple months back or so, in stellar terms a near hit.

    The one in 2040 isnt the only one, there are countless others including one in 2052 that will be very close and is very large.

    It isnt a case of IF, it is a case of WHEN. The earth and other planets are constantly bombarded with asteroids or comets. We are long overdue for a cataclysmic strike.

    They reckon they will get a better fix on it's trajectory in 2023 when it makes a close approach to the Earth. Even then it will have about another 13 orbits to complete about the Sun before its closest approach to the Earth, so it'll be in interesting to see how close a fix they'll manage then.
