    Links start playing very big role in competitive queries, try ranking for "credit cards" without good link profile.

    If nobody links to your site over time, that (fairly accurately) suggests your site is not interesting. Anyway search engines do look at content - my site was #1 on bing and top of page 2 on Google with not one single link in/out.
