    Depends how urgent something is.

    Seeing a lot of instant messaging use these days as it offers best of both worlds. Instant and recordable/searchable. Can also have several isolated conversations at once.

    Glad that Google Wave crap died on it's arse though. Being able to see a response as it is typed is not always a good idea, especially when replying to a cretin who has cocked something up and the red mist is descending. At least with normal IM and email you get the chance to edit your messages before sending!

    I've a simple rule. Use a phone if its important (a bell rings and people notice it). Email may get noticed but it really does depend how busy I am and I trying to follow the practice of only looking at email first thing in the morning or immediately after lunch. Then doing proper work.
